本书从宏观的角度为当代中国道德生活的变迁和道德建设的努力方向提供了一种合理的解释和有价值的思考。既从公共性的理论谱系去研究了现代社会公共生活道德的价值诉求及社会结构基础，又从公共性的实践谱系去探究了当今社会道德实践的新模式。把握住了伦理学理论范式、中心视城和它的生活基础三者的内在关联，特别提倡和推崇尊重、宽容、信任和积极参与等体现公共精神的道德价值，并分析论证了我们的价值系统和行为模式因此而调整的哲学基础和价值基础。首次提出应从政治维度和社会维度去把握公共生活中公民道德的观点，也厘清了新中国成立以后同时使用的“公德”与“社会公德”这两概念的区别和联系，并从一种德性的生成论视角论证了现代人从正当到崇高的道德追求的可行性。
