本书系统阐述了红林村这一京郊山村自道光年间建村以来经济社会诸多方面的历史变迁，具体包括：村庄的历史沿革；人口与土地；农业及非农产业；村民生活；村级组织及其治理；村庄的可持续发展，等等。本书围绕农业、农村、农民在社会经济变迁中的演变轨迹这一主线而展开，通过对村庄的农业、农村和农民的百年变迁来映射中国农村的发展变化。全书分为两大部分，即研究报告和个案访谈。其中，研究报告包括十三章，从不同侧面详细阐述了村庄的演变轨迹，“相当于一部十分全面的红林村村志”；个案访谈则是在大量访谈中选取38个个案，以当事者口述的形式再现其本人的经历及村庄的变迁，“是对于村庄基本文献资料的生动阐释。”

This book systematically expounds the historical changes in many aspects of the economy and society of Honglin Village, a mountain village on the outskirts of Beijing, since its establishment in the Daoguang period, including: the historical evolution of the village; population and land; agriculture and non-agricultural industries; Villager life; village-level organizations and their governance; Sustainable development of the village, etc. This book focuses on the main line of the evolution of agriculture, rural areas, and farmers in social and economic changes, and maps the development and changes of rural China through the century-old changes of village agriculture, rural areas, and farmers.
