本书是对中国古代文学中以小说戏曲为主本的叙事文学与佛道教关系的研究的深化。针对古代小说戏曲与佛道教关系的研究往往只探讨其文化内涵，或者只片面涉及文言小说、白话小说、戏曲中的一种的缺憾，本书重在跨越三者的研究藩篱，从文学创作、表现的角度分析中国古代小说戏曲中的佛道教现象，系统地研究其中佛道教书写的叙事功能和阅读美学效应，包括佛教题材小说的沿革与创造、文学视野下的佛道教度脱剧的演进、佛道教书写与古代经典小说创作主旨的解读、章回小说佛道教书写的比较分析等，以期能发现其中规律性的东西。
