本书探讨宋金至清末戏剧活动及作品中的母题类型及其发展。首先断代考察，解决特定时代背景与母题间的关系，探究现实文化氛围如何影响了“母题”的内涵与意义。其次纵向考察，研究哪些母题个案长期持存？以及“持存”中如何刷新前代原型？这意味着已深入到戏曲母题与民族文化传统、心理习惯、艺术精神之关系的层面。它使我们看到了一个母题在不同时期不同作品中的“变迁史”，一种“文化意蕴单元”的蝉蜕、衍替及发展的痕迹；从而由一个侧面透示了中华文化何以生生不息的原由：那是因为有无数的小的“意蕴单元”在时时更新、涅槃，保持着它的活性特质。再者是剧家作品与母题的关系。一个剧家不管他写的作品多少，前代遗留或现实中滋生的各种母题，都会无例外地渗入其创作活动及剧作表达。

This book explores the genres and developments in theatrical activities and works from the Song-Jin dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty. Firstly, the era is examined, the relationship between the background of a specific era and the motif is solved, and the influence of the real cultural atmosphere on the connotation and significance of the motif is explored. Secondly, longitudinal examination, which parent theme cases are studied for a long time? And how to refresh the previous generation prototype in "Holding"? This means that it has penetrated into the relationship between the motif of opera and national cultural traditions, psychological habits, and artistic spirit.
