在20世纪相当长的一个历史时期，人们提及“白话文运动”总是言必称“五四”，而对清末白话文（学）潮流则轻描淡写，贬多褒少。时至今日，尽管白话文运动并非五四之特产已渐为学界所认知，然而，人们对清末白话文运动之整体形态及流变轨迹仍然缺乏明晰的认识。本书基于近代原始报刊史料，从清末白话文运动之理论自觉、主要阵地与中心位移、民间力量与官方资源、白话文体探索、语言特征与流变、拟想读者与实际受众、白话报人与白话文作家，及其与启蒙救亡思潮、语文改革思潮、白话文学思潮、五四白话文运动之历史关联等方面，对清末白话文运动展开多角度的系统考察与立体研究，初步还原了清末白话文运动的历史面貌。

For a long period of the 20th century, when people mentioned the "vernacular literary movement", they always referred to it as "May Fourth", while the trend of vernacular literature (learning) in the late Qing Dynasty was downplayed and disparaged. Today, although the vernacular movement is not a specialty of May Fourth and is gradually recognized by scholars, there is still a lack of clear understanding of the overall form and rheological trajectory of the vernacular movement in the late Qing Dynasty. Based on the historical materials of modern primitive newspapers and periodicals, this book carries out a multi-angle systematic investigation and three-dimensional research on the vernacular literary movement in the late Qing Dynasty, from the aspects of theoretical consciousness, main positions and center displacement, civil forces and official resources, vernacular stylistic exploration, language characteristics and rheology, imaginary readers and actual audiences, vernacular newspaper people and vernacular writers, and their historical relationship with the Enlightenment Salvation Movement, the language reform trend, the vernacular literary trend, and the May Fourth vernacular literary movement, etc., and initially restores the historical appearance of the late Qing vernacular literary movement.（AI翻译）
