提起民国和抗战时期的中国陆军，人们多会说起“血性”“顽强”等词汇。因为缺乏先进的兵器，绝大多数的中国陆军官兵，不得不以血肉之躯抵抗日军的钢铁洪流。
而鲜为人知的是，民国陆军也一直在想方设法地进行军队现代化，而作为当年军队现代化的先驱，徐庭瑶、杜聿明、孙立人等将领也多是在和日军的拼杀中，逐步总结经验，才将中国早期的机械化部队捏合成形。而这支机械化部队，也在和日军的作战之中，冲在了最紧要的位置。但很可惜，因为装备受制、人才缺乏，以及战术协同不够等原因，这支装甲兵部队虽奋力作战，却一直没能显露出和自己实力对等的战果。直至驻印时，彻底按照美式编制、美式训练、美式装备，中国的装甲兵才在抗战末期变成了一支劲旅。他们的经历，也给现在中国军事的发展提供了无数的借鉴。
