本书关注从1978年至2018年这四十年间北京城市空间的艺术发展。对城市空间中艺术的关注与研究，是当下跨文化、跨学科的艺术史研究之新课题。本书以中国的首都北京这座城市空间中的艺术为研究关注点，以1978年改革开放至2018年这四十年为时间维度展开，考察并呈现此段时间内促使及以参与形式介入的艺术行为发生的不同主体，分析其目的与举措，探究艺术介入城市的方式、过程与深度变化。
