本书的要旨在于从文化研究的角度解读西方的文学艺术。结构上主要以时间为线索，辅以国家和地区的划分，对西方的文化和文学艺术自古希腊到20世纪的发展史进行梳理和新的阐释。在深入把握不同时期和民族的文化精神时，尝试突破由跨文化意识形态的差异带来的曲解， 以期在互文性的探讨中，对西方的文学、绘画、雕塑、建筑等艺术乃至整个文化有更加深入、宽广的理解。
