本书是从交通史、行政史和区域文化史的视角考察战国秦汉若干历史文化现象的论著。作者结合考古文物资料和传世史籍文献，就以下主题有所考察：中原文化重心地位的形成和演变，秦扩张的路径和趋势，彭城与“梁砀之间”的交通形势与政治文化，“北边”的交通经营与行政建设，人口流动问题的交通史与区域文化史意义。也进行了战国秦汉交通格局与区域行政的若干个案研究，提出了一些新见。
