太行山东麓是中华文明的重要发祥地。泥河湾早期人类遗址、平山沕沕水旧石器文化遗址，磁山、裴李岗等地新石器文化遗址，呈现出系统而完整的史前文明发展脉络。进入历史时期，因其险要而关键的地理位置，成为历代兵家必争之地。因军事与战争等原因，在历史上形成了各种类型的古村落。从太行山东麓井陉域内的古村落入手，进而探讨与此相关的历史文化，以小见大，从乡野的角度来呈现民族和国家发展变迁的大历史，是本书研究的重要立意。
