本著收录了67位土家织锦传承人的口述史。研究者通过对传承人人生经历、从业经历以及个人所听、所看和所思、所悟的访谈，从传承人个人生命史中来呈现土家织锦行业及区域社会的整体历史。这些口述史清晰呈现了20世纪80年代以来在社会急剧变迁的过程中土家织锦发展的几个主要阶段以及实施非物质文化遗产保护工程以来的保护效果，也透射出了边远地区的区域社会在改革大潮中的适应与发展。
