本书主要研究石刻的文献价值及其文学价值，研究石刻在文学发展历史上的贡献，对石刻的发生、发展、繁荣，石刻的功用及其文献与文学价值，石刻的文体特性、石刻的文学传播方式与贡献等方面进行了深入研究。本研究开拓了文献研究和文学研究的新领域，为古代文学研究提供了新的文学史料，丰富了古代文学的研究内容，拓展了文学研究的新思路与研究空间。将石刻的田野考察与传统文献相结合研究文学的发展，打开了石刻研究的新视野。
