作为道家学派的立宗者，老子深刻塑造了中国哲学的精神品格，但古今学界对《老子》其书、老子之学及其历史影响却多有歧解和误说。本书综合运用哲学、语文学、思想史等多种理论方法，通过精详辨析《老子》文本的词句、思想与流衍，对后世加诸老子的一些不确之论作出了辩驳和澄清，呈现了老子之学的本貌，对其现代意蕴亦有发明。
