本书对美国批判教育学者吉鲁的教育哲学思想进行了系统研究，考察了其思想形成的理论基础与来源，对吉鲁关于教育理解的立论基点进行了分析，阐释了吉鲁所倡导的差异教育、边界教育的主要观点。吉鲁教育哲学思想的宗旨在于构建一种激进的批判教育理论，其思想在发挥教师作为公共知识分子的使命与责任、培养具有批判性思维的公民、建设一个更加民主公正的社会等方面具有积极意义和深远影响。
