16世纪中后期是中国“被全球化”的历史时期。与海战、海上贸易密切相关，海疆局势为文人才俊提供了展示才华的机会，海疆幕府极大地吸引着内地的青春文士。抗倭总督胡宗宪浙江幕府汇集了大批各路精英。在历史动荡时期，幕僚文士协助幕主巩固了海防边疆，稳定了明代时局。而与海战相始终的幕府文学文化活动则直接引领了时代文学潮流。幕府文化生活的需要、幕僚文士的唱和交流使得此际产生了大批幕府文学，戏曲、骈文、小说争奇斗艳，军事文学亦蓬勃发展。其中最有影响的是绍兴名士徐渭。徐渭的创作代表了胡宗宪幕府文学的成就和时代文坛的发展趋势。徐渭之后，许多才华卓荦的文士在胡宗先遇害后加入新的海疆边防幕府，继续从事军事与文化活动。海疆幕府很大程度上直接绘制了中国16世纪中后期的文学地图，并从此改变了中国的文坛生态。
