本书以叶圣陶先生的文艺美学思想为主要研究对象，他的美学思想是其文艺思想的总纲。立足生活，强调人本位，是叶圣陶美学思想的基本特点。在文艺问题上，叶圣陶以生活为文学的源泉。他以“为人生”为文学与教育的结合点。叶圣陶的文艺美学思想可以称为“生活美学”：以生活为泉源，以人为核心，强调教育对人的引导功能、尊重学生的主体地位等，都体现出强烈的现实情怀与致用意识。
