本书尝试从当代句法学的角度考察汉语的“意合”现象，运用“零形素句法”理论阐释汉语的“意合”特征，在普遍语法理论的“原则-参数”框架内解释汉英语言的“意合-形合”差异。作者在乔姆斯基的普遍语法理论的框架内重新审视“汉语重意合，英语重形合”的传统观点，分析了汉语句法层面的“零形素”现象，树立了以下基本观点：1）从普遍语法理论的角度看，“汉语重意合，英语重形合”是个伪命题，任何语言的语句生成都要靠“形”合；2）“零形素”是汉语的有效构句成分，在名源动词和增元结构的句法推导中得到充分体现；3）句法层面的“汉语重意合，英语重形合”现象实际上反映的是“零形素句法”的参数变异：在汉语中“零形素”是句法推导中的有效构句成分，在英语中则不是。

程杰（1970—），男，甘肃定西人。华南师范大学教授，研究生导师。主要研究方向：生成语言学、英汉句法对比研究、认知语言学和英语教学研究。1997年西北师范大学外语系“英语教育”专业毕业，获学士学位；2001年西南大学（原西南师范大学）外国语学院“英语语言文学”专业毕业，获硕士学位；2007年广东外语外贸大学“外国语言学及应用语言学”专业毕业，获博士学位。2014年1月至2015年1月在美国马里兰大学语言学系访学。在Lingua、Diachronica、《当代语言学》、《现代外语》、《外语与外语教学》、《华文教学与研究》、《四川外国语学院学报》、《解放军外国语学院学报》等期刊发表论文20多篇；在科学出版社出版专著《汉语名源动词的句法生成研究》（2010年）；主持过国家社科基金项目（零形素句法研究——对汉英“意合—形合”类型性差异的句法学阐释）、教育部人文社科项目（英汉构词句法对比研究：名源动词的最简方案推导及诠释）等的研究工作。
