中国的改革开放进程带来了社会利益主体多元化和社会矛盾显性化的社会新情势，典型表现是群体性事件日益频发，其中互联网与实体性事件相结合，赋予了群体事件新特质。本书立足于社会运动理论和社会变迁视角，建构了解释中国群体事件形成的一般性理论框架，分析了互联网对群体事件的作用与影响机理，揭示了社会运动的产生是中国社会结构性特征所决定的这一核心命题，提出了以“制度化社会运动”为核心的治理思路。
The process of China's reform and opening up has brought about a new social situation in which social stakeholders are diversified and social contradictions become obvious, which is typically manifested in the increasing frequency of mass incidents, in which the combination of the Internet and physical events has given new characteristics to mass incidents. Based on the perspective of social movement theory and social change, this book constructs a general theoretical framework to explain the formation of mass incidents in China, analyzes the role and influence mechanism of the Internet on mass events, reveals the core proposition that the emergence of social movements is determined by the structural characteristics of Chinese society, and puts forward the governance idea with "institutionalized social movements" as the core.（AI翻译）
