The author has been conducting 30 years of fieldwork in the area where the epic poem "The Legend of King Gesar" was transmitted, witnessing the development and change of this epic oral tradition. The book systematically summarizes, sorts out and classifies the inheritors of epic poetry, folk rap artists, and discusses in detail the social status and contribution of artists, the content and form of rap, the social and cultural background of rap artists, the mystery of illiterate artists' memory preservation epics, and the relationship between oral rap and written texts. At the same time, the author also pays attention to a group of young Tibetan artists who emerged in China at the beginning of the 21st century, analyzes the unique cultural and contemporary background they produced, and discusses the trend of the continuation and development of the oral tradition of Gesar. This book records the author's interviews with 24 Tibetan, Mongolian and Turkish artists, showing the true picture of the 20th-century epic "The Legend of King Gesar" circulating in China.
