本作在城市化进程的研究视阈中，以西北地区特殊的地理、人文生态环境为切入点，运用民族学、政治学、经济学等多学科的理论、方法和手段，通过历时态和共时态的视角分析城市化进程对西北民族关系的影响，以及在此条件下形成的西北民族关系新特点，进而从政治、经济、文化等层面研究调适城市化进程中西北民族关系的对策问题。拙著的思考和探索力求为民族学的相关问题研究另辟新的领域，使研究范畴逐渐拓宽并贴近时代发展的主题。
