“德性”是20世纪后半期学术界比较热门的术语，在“德性”的光照之下，中西方都产生了德性伦理复兴的浪潮，国内外有许多学者将中西的德性之学进行比较。本书就是在此感召之下重点分析了思孟学派和亚里士多德伦理学的德性之旨和德性之用。认为双方都以德性为其伦理学的基础和依归，但前者具有天人合一的辩证思维，德性的先天性、内在性，情感的基础性，形而上学、伦理学和政治学合一的主要特色；后者具有认知的形式思维，德性的后天性，德行的重要性，理性的主导性，以及在形而上学、伦理学和政治学分离基础上统一的主要特色。而这些特色源于双方的社会体制和自然环境等方面的不同。
