本书立足于科举文化大背景，以时代先后为序，选取可取与文人及其文学创作密切关联的一些问题，进行了脚位专门的探研。其中关涉了自唐至清的部分科举文学内容，包括了诗歌、散文、小说、戏曲及科举问题诸方面。在稽考文人读书科举生活的基础上，把握创作主体的生态环境、生命样态与心性特征。对诸种文学现象、文人活动和文体的关注、聚焦、阐论，旨在揭示其颇为纠结的科举文化因缘，透视其间的复杂关系，力图作出一些富有一定新意的诠解，并藉此尝试拓展古代文学研究的别样思路与学术空间。
