本书是关于中国古代戏曲艺术批评实践与理论的研究。本着对传统艺术的研究。实际上也是对可能生成的潜艺术范型或正在生成的新艺术范型的探讨的指导思想，在忠实于戏曲批评实践与理论的历史本真的同时，以艾布拉姆斯的“世界”、“作者”、“作品”、“读者”的“四要素”的当代理论视野从戏曲的音乐结构、剧情结构、代言体的创作与表演、以体验为中心互动接受、戏曲艺术品格以及戏曲理论的生成与诸艺术理论的关系等方面，对何谓中国古代戏曲理论进行了较为系统的梳理与研究。在对相关概念、命题的理论探讨与阐释的过程中，辨识南曲与北曲、曲牌联套体与板式体、中国古代戏曲与当下新潮音乐文化等的流变关系及艺术个性，从“唱”、“念”、“做”、“打”的代言体文本及舞台创作与“观”、“听”接受等领域里，突出了中国古代戏曲的艺术物质与审美魅力。使本书的理论研究既具有学术的当代性，又符合古代戏曲理论及批评的原意。
