本书聚焦于中国近现代文化保守主义思潮的生成与发展，致力于考察它对中国近现代文艺批评与美学观念的影响，着重关注文化保守主义思潮与中国现代文艺批评领域中的其他思潮的互动关系，通过对晚清小说文体观念的建构、清末学制改革中“文学”学科观念的建立、民初新旧之争中文化权力更迭逻辑、胡适等人与“学衡派”诸人对于现代性的不同理解以及国民党官方的文化保守主义政策与知识分子之间的互动、中国现代学者对于中国传统文化诠释的美学化趋向、现代诗人对中国诗歌形式传统的再认识等一系列问题的分析，力图展现文化保守主义思潮对于中国文化与文艺批评现代进程的复杂影响，并省思传统思想资源对于中国文化现代化进程的意义，进而为全球化语境下的中国文化探索一种可能的因应之道。
