本书立足于“问题意识”和“方法意识”，尝试总结中国现代文学史料研究中存在的问题，归纳其基本方法和基本原则。对一些重要问题和方法，加以专题研究，如：以一组发掘整理和应用现代文学史料的文章，指出现代文学史料搜集、整理及全集和选本编纂中出现的问题，提出相应的解决办法；鉴于中国文学史编写中存在诸多史料错讹，以几部影响大、有代表性的中国文学史著作为研究对象，考察文学史编写中的文献史料问题；又以近年出版的两部中国现代文学史料学研究专著（谢泳的《中国现代文学史研究法》和刘增杰的《中国现代文学史料学》）为中心，探讨中国现代文学史料学的建构问题。
