本书旨在对刚刚过去的20世纪中国文学，从文化创造的有无、大小、方式、形态和性质等等角度，给予整体性的把握。本书认为，这一世纪的文学总的来说具有崭新的文化创造，在对新文化的不同形态（如民主文化、科学文化、自由主义文化、重建的民族主义文化、理想主义文化和社会主义文化等）的追求中，经历了非常艰难曲折的过程，并且这一建构的过程在新的世纪里仍会继续。本书一方面尽量从具体的个案分析中见宏观大势，从微观中见出实在的创造之迹；另一方面，又具有整体思考和把握，不能淹没在具体的材料或个案之中。本书体现了对文化建设和人文学科前沿的关切，尽可能多所借鉴和融会，强调创新意识，努力实现文学研究向文化学和创造学的层次深入，并注意文学与民族文化、世界文化的多向交流和影响。总之，本书的意义不仅在于对现当代文学和文化的探源与分析，亦可作为社会和人生的镜鉴和文化建设规划的参考。对从事现当代文化、文学研究的学者尤其是对青年学子当有所启发。
This book aims to give a holistic grasp of the Chinese literature of the 20th century from the perspectives of the existence, size, form, form and nature of cultural creation.
