本书是卢兆荫为从事汉唐考古工作60年所辑，均为作者根据考古发掘资料并结合文献记载进行研究的学术论文，内容涵盖考古与历史、玉器与玉文化、唐代金银器三大方面。作者是满城汉墓的发掘者之一，他在田野考古发掘之余，还曾在《考古》编辑部工作，其文笔优美流畅、深入浅出，所作汉代玉器、唐代金银器的文章，不但具有较高的学术价值，也适合普通读者阅读。卢先生已有91岁高龄，此书也是他一生从事考古工作的总结。
