本书以蒙古民族历史文化经典《蒙古秘史》为研究对象，辅以同时期相关蒙古历史文化的史书、游记、札记和志书文献，运用民俗学、文化人类学、民间文学和历史考证等方法，着力对《蒙古秘史》文本进行梳理，对书中记载的民俗文化事象进行归类、分析、整合，全面系统地呈现《蒙古秘史》写作时代的蒙古民族民俗文化生活原貌。该书对《蒙古秘史》所反映的13世纪前半时期蒙古族口头传统、生产民俗、生活民俗、信仰民俗的关注和探讨，具有一定的理论意义和现实意义。
