本书立足史料发掘和文本细读，综合运用传播学、叙事学、文化研究等多种理论和方法，通过还原新中国成立初期（1949—1966）特定历史时期的社会语境，考察分析该时期作家为了建立起个人与历史发展，个体与人民（无产阶级、工农兵）的密切关联，在第一次文代会人民文艺精神指引下，以人民认同为基础，以具有强烈社会象征行为的基本话语实践活动—文学创作（知识分子叙事）为媒介，进行人民文艺实践和建构，以实现自身成为无产阶级人民大众一份子的状况。
