民间文学和民俗学兴起于新文化运动，是一场“眼光向下”的学术革命。1949年之后，劳动人民当家作主，民间文学作为劳动人民的集体创作、民众智慧的思想结晶，在人民概念的形成、集体与传统的界定、民族精神的提炼等基本问题上贡献卓著，对于现代民族国家的形成发挥了重要作用。1978年以来，民俗学的复兴进一步加快了民族国家话语体系的理论建构，在社会主义精神文明建设、和谐社会建设、非物质文化遗产保护、传统文化复兴、村落保护、乡村振兴等方面均有杰出贡献。
