本书是作者自50年代迄今研治隋唐五代社会经济史成果的结集。共收论文20篇，分三类：一是有关财政与经济的论文；一是有关农民起义的论文；一是从总体上考察这一时期的论文。三类论文都是围绕着社会经济史的线索展开的，因而存在着相关性。本书在一定程度上反映出50年代成长起来的一批学者的学术倾向。因此，本书不仅对隋唐五代史各领域的研究有多方面的学术价值，而且对了解新中国成立以来隋唐史研究逐步开拓的发展过程，也是有意义的。
