真实的经济增长是具有空间属性的，要理解经济增长的空间集聚现象就必须将“空间”这一维度纳入统一分析框架中，通过阐释经济增长空间分异的理论逻辑来理解规模经济与规模不经济的辩证关系。引发经济增长空间分异的关键是经济空间效率，由于劳动力、资本等要素既存在产业部门间配置的不均衡性，也存在地理空间分布的不均衡，这使得经济增长的空间效率取决于要素与产业在空间上的双重匹配关系。本书所关注的正是“不均衡的要素分布和产业集聚之间的关系，以及二者究竟如何影响经济增长”。深入地揭示经济增长的产业与空间的匹配机制，可以更好地理解影响地区经济增长和产业集聚、扩散的共性因素，这对优化经济空间格局、构建现代化经济体系、促进新型城镇化高质量发展以及提升中国经济运行内外部环境都具有重要现实意义。
