马克思主义的社会形态演变一般规律理论告诉我们，人类社会形态发展的历史顺序，是经原始社会、奴隶社会、封建社会、资本主义社会，再经社会主义社会过渡而进入共产主义社会（社会主义社会是共产主义社会的第一阶段）的历史进程，这就是马克思主义关于社会历史发展的“五形态”学说。
中国历史发展在经历了两百多万年的原始社会、两千多年的奴隶社会、两千多年的封建社会、一百多年的半殖民地半封建社会，到中华人民共和国成立，进入社会主义初级阶段，构成了既有人类社会发展普遍规律，又有中华民族历史发展独特性的社会形态演进与发展道路。
本书以马克思主义社会形态演变一般规律理论即“五形态”学说为指导，结合中国历史的特殊性，探讨中国历史发展道路上的经济形态、政治形态和组织形态，以及相应的阶级关系变化与社会历史演进的辩证关系。
The Marxist theory of the general law of the evolution of social forms tells us that the historical order of the development of human social forms is the historical process of entering the communist society (socialist society is the first stage of communist society) through primitive society, slave society, feudal society, capitalist society, and then through socialist society. After more than 2 million years of primitive society, more than 2,000 years of slave society, more than 2,000 years of feudal society, and more than 100 years of semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, China's historical development has entered the initial stage of socialism, constituting a social form evolution and development path that not only has the universal law of the development of human society but also the uniqueness of the historical development of the Chinese nation.
