《小说新报》（1915—1923）是民初市民作家（即所谓的旧派作家或鸳鸯蝴蝶派作家）的一个大本营，是持续时间较久（9年），发行期数较多（共94期），发行范围较广，影响较大的大型通俗文学刊物，具有代表性。本书摈弃中国文学现代化进程研究中普遍使用的“冲击——反应模式”，采用“自感——反应模式”，突出“内源性”而非“外源性”。全书包括《小说新报》与民初长篇小说的正统性及其变革、《小说新报》与民初短篇小说的正统性及其变革、《小说新报》与民初小说艺术的内源性变革、《小说新报》与传统诗文之延续、《小说新报》与民初讲唱文学及其小传统、《小说新报》与传统戏曲的变革、《小说新报》与我国的谐隐文学小传统、《小说新报》与传统文学批评文体及其新变、《小说新报》之改良与民初旧派文学之调适等九章，内容丰富，不乏创意。

"Novel Xinbao" (1915-1923) was a base camp of citizen writers (the so-called old-school writers or Mandarin duck butterfly writers) in the early Minchu Dynasty, and was a large-scale popular literary journal with a long duration (9 years), a large number of circulation issues (a total of 94 issues), a wide circulation range, and a large influence.
