本书以现代汉语的直接来源——明清汉语为研究对象，立足该期方言背景比较明确的南北白话文献，从南北同义异词、同词异义、方言词语等方面，对以往讨论不多的明清汉语词汇的南北差异及相关问题进行较为全面、深入的考察和探究，旨在前人研究的基础上进一步发掘汉语词汇史（包括方言词汇史）研究的价值与意义。
