佛教戒律的产生是一个历史的过程。大乘兴起后，戒律中的大乘中心思想明显增强。佛教传入中国后，戒律也随着中国的环境发生了诸多变化。一是政治化：佛教戒律吸收了中国的礼仪传统，也在一定层面上改变了中国法律。二是专科化：律宗的形成为中国建立了一个完整的戒律理解体系。二是宗派化：各大宗派根据自身不同的理念发展出了不同的戒律思想。四是儒道化：在儒道二家的影响下，大量的儒家与道家元素充实进佛教戒律之中，成为僧人所遵循的准则。五是现代化：近现代佛教戒律的改革使佛教戒律更能适应今日的社会。

The emergence of Buddhist precepts is a historical process. After the rise of Mahayana, the central idea of Mahayana in the precepts was significantly strengthened. After Buddhism was introduced to China, the precepts also changed a lot with the Chinese environment.
