本书从中国文化遗产传承、中国学术史、文献传播、知识管理等新的视角对中国近现代以前目录学的历史背景、发展过程、重要人物、重要成果进行全面系统的梳理与考证。全书围绕从公元前8世纪到1949年目录学发展的各个历史时期进行阐述。与以往目录学史著作相比，本书的特点在于：一是改变过去将书目发展史等同于目录学史的做法，从学科出发研究文献、目录与目录学发展的关系，总结目录学发展成就；二是将目录学置于社会背景下，运用科学方法进行分析，揭示目录学对于学术文化与社会发展的贡献；三是从思想史的角度，重点探讨目录学思想，揭示目录学发展规律。
