本书在明治时期汉学发展变化考察的基础上，对明治诗话与汉诗中的“中国韵味”和“日本特色”进行整体观照，挖掘明治汉诗文与中国文化的内在关联，结合明治时期的时代风潮，剖析日本文人汉诗文创作时的文化心态和创作风格。主要内容包括明治汉诗文坛的发展阶段，中日文人之间的汉诗文交流，明治诗话的内容、特征与成因，以及明治时期不同阶段汉诗文的不同风格等几个方面，进而揭示明治诗话和汉诗文在明治文学史上的地位与作用。
