本书以马克思主义的“历史的”和“美学的”科学文艺观为指导，以丰富扎实的史料为基础，以史、论结合的方式把中国现当代杂文发展的历史过程及精蕴，包括思潮、流派和文体的来龙去脉清晰地梳理出来。其中特别注意从广泛的历史联系，尤其是从历经劫难而又重谋振兴的中华民族现代生存史的大文化背景上透视杂文现象的林林总总，对百年杂文发展史（从“五四”新文化运动到“新时期”）从思想深层和艺术规律上作出阐释和总结。末附“中国现当代杂文史事编年”。
