本书是《汉语新诗韵论》（张玉来/许霆合著，中国社会科学出版社2019年版）一书中《汉语新诗韵书》部分的修订，在分析新诗押韵的实践基础上，依据北京话音系，探讨了普通话分韵的历史、原则、标准以及分韵的层级等学术问题，总结了新诗韵书编纂正反两方面的历史经验，划分了韵母韵（39韵）、严韵（15韵）、通韵（13辙）三级韵部体系，最终编成了普通话韵谱字汇。本书所提出的分韵体系和韵谱字汇是学术性的和指导性的，不具有强制性，使用者既可当作正音材料使用，也可以用来查检韵字，根据需要自行取舍。
