歇后语研究是近年来汉语语言学中比较沉寂的领域，尤其是进入21世纪，鲜有专门系统的理论研究著作。本书作者十年来一直致力于歇后语理论研究，在《辞书研究》、《励耘语言学刊》、《澳门语言学刊》、Chinese Lexical Semantics等刊物或国际会议论文集上发表多篇有影响的研究论文。在此基础上，作者将其整合与增补，添加前沿课题的若干章节，从歇后语的界定、语义、结构、应用等多个角度入手，形成更为完整的歇后语研究体系，重点在理论上进行更深层次的探讨，以期为歇后语研究的发展有所助力。
