平南话指广西平南县通用的粤方言。平南话处在粤、客、闽三种汉语方言共存的区域。目前粤方言是平南县的主要语言，客家方言、闽方言呈岛状分布或交叉融合分布。本书采用共时与历时相结合的视角，将平南话的音系分别与广州话的音系、中古音系进行了比较，以探究平南话音系的特点，并对平南话连读变调的特点、精组字声母和韵母的特点、送气分调、小称特点、状态形容词等专题进行了研究。附录平南话的同音字汇和分类词表。
