本书在建构“身份地位化”研究框架的基础上，借由相关解密外交档案，探究了1945年至1967年（二战结束至东盟成立）期间英国的“东南亚区域合作”政策，揭示了这一政策实践对东南亚的区域影响。研究认为，英国的“东南亚区域合作”是其东南亚政策而非现代意义的区域合作，但在区域“身份地位化”进程中，英国的政策实践从合作成员共享、集体身份塑造、组织经验积累及区域规范扩散等4个互为一体的方面，影响了现代东南亚区域建构及区域合作起源。
