本书是由国内第一篇研究现代货币理论的博士论文所形成的专著。现代货币理论（Modern Money Theory，Modern Monetary Theory，MMT）是20世纪90年代出现的一种后凯恩斯主义经济学理论。当前学界对现代货币理论争论不断，本书力图回溯其经济思想史渊源，还原其本来面貌。
本书从思想脉络、前沿争论和中国经验这三个角度考察现代货币理论。当前国内外宏观经济环境更趋严峻和不确定，传统宏观经济政策框架的有效性面临挑战。批判性地研究和借鉴现代货币理论对于中国构建新型宏观经济政策框架有着重要的理论和现实意义。
