本书分上下两篇，重点从乡村组织、编户管理、田制变迁、赋役治理、农民负担等方面对先秦至晚清的中国古代乡村治理演变进行了总体扫描，对乡村治理在古代王朝国家治理体系中的地位、功能、作用、效能进行了相应评估，并在系统分析中国古代乡村治理的体系构成、参与主体、治理内涵的基础上，重点探寻了影响中国古代乡村治理的主要变量和关键因素，总结了中国古代乡村治理发展变化的理性逻辑和一般规律。
