1918年第一次世界大战结束后，魏玛共和国在革命中宣告成立。成立伊始，魏玛共和国便笼罩在不祥的征兆之下。战败的经验以及《凡尔赛和约》的强硬条款为德国带来巨额负债，左翼及右翼极端思想、通货膨胀和大规模失业共同蚕食着人们对魏玛共和国的信任。20世纪30年代初期，集体失望最终演化为绝望，传播希望、承诺虚妄出路的极端纳粹思想日益深得人心。霍斯特·穆勒在这本包罗万象的巨著中生动描绘了魏玛共和国的政治、社会、经济、文化以及社会文化意识形态
