本书为满文文献的初学者选编了若干篇章，冀望读者能够借此初步理解文意，进而深入满文文献的浩瀚文海。前言分类介绍了满文文献的来源、现存状况、价值、阅读注意事项等内容。正文选录《满洲实录》、《满文加圈点档》、公文、翻译古文等片段。为便于读者学习，正文部分的满文采用写法转写的形式，并附以汉文。附录两篇未加转写的满文文献，备进阶之用。
