本书主要围绕海昏侯刘贺墓出土的“孔子衣镜”进行探讨，尝试分析了衣镜纹饰的整体布局、人物传记的文本依据、孔子师徒的圣人君子形象以及西王母东王公画像和《衣镜赋》“蜚虡”的重要内涵，认为衣镜对于了解汉代的儒学思想、五行学说、教化方式、神仙信仰、灵兽观念和《史记》等文献的价值都颇有助益，并可以体现汉画像、汉镜在汉代史学研究方面不可或缺的史料作用。
