The On Civilization is a theoretical work dedicated to reconstructing the indigenous theoretical framework of Chinese civilization, thereby laying a solid foundation for its historical interpretation. At its core, Chinese civilization is defined by the pursuit of moral self-cultivation and human perfection, rather than being solely measured by technological advancement. The author develops a civilization theory centered on the “Three Essentials and Three Foundations”, proposing that morality constitutes the foundation of personal cultivation, knowledge serves as the basis for individual development, and ritual propriety underpins societal governance. The book reveals the foundational role of astronomy in the emergence of civilization and reconstructs a credible historical narrative of Chinese civilization rooted in eight thousand years of astronomical observation and the practice of cultural virtue.
