就中国历史上的汉、唐王朝，及其间跌宕发展的三国、两晋、南北朝、隋而言，长时段的社会演进情况复杂。欲重绘汉唐间的历史变迁，借助传世文献之外，20世纪至今发掘的简牍，埋藏于地下的墓志，树立于地面的石刻，各类遗址中发现的纸文书，必然构成新的史料源。
本书利用新材料，探讨汉唐间户籍赋役制度、公文书、法律制度、区域治理、家族与人口流动等话题；既回应了行政、制度、经济、法律等传统研究热点，又从基层出发，对地方社会、家族及个体进行了拉近距离式的“深描”。
